Technical Glossary Q - S

Quench
Local loss of superconducting property (no ohm resistance) in a superconductor, with generation of heat, when subject to electrical current

Refrigerating plant
Low-temperature refrigerator which recools still cold gas to an even lower temperature and/or reliquefies it (in contrast to a liquefier)

Refrigerator
See refrigerating plant

Roots blower
A pressure or vacuum pump with a multi-vane rotor mechanism

Service factor
Measure of permitted output power as a ratio of the rated power of a motor (typically 1.15, i.e. 15% more than the rated power)

Shield cooling
Low-temperature surface surrounding an even colder component in order to remove radiant heat at higher temperatures, thereby increasing process efficiency

Sliding valve (of a rotary screw compressor)
A device for adjusting the inlet aperture and thus the induced flow of a compressor

Steam reformer
A reforming process in which a hydrocarbon is reacted with steam and, after intermediate reactions, produces hydrogen and carbon dioxide

Superconducting probe
Probe which serves as a level gauge using the superconducting effect (heated rod); where there is insufficient cooling (e.g. in gaseous phase) a measurable ohm resistance develops

Superinsulation
Superinsulation uses several layers of barrier material made of highly reflective aluminium foil; conduction of heat is avoided, for example, by use of spacers
