Linde Kryotechnik has decades of experience in the specialist area of hydrogen liquefaction. Our company has built systems with capacities ranging from 150 to well over 20,000 litres per hour. Most of the machinery is manufactured as a turnkey installation at a fixed cost. This fund of experience is the basis for a proven series of onward developments.
Key components include aluminium-plate heat exchangers and gas- or oil-bearing expansion turbines, developed and manufactured in our own production centres.
System capacities
In the lower capacity range, between 150 and 1000 l/h, a closed helium circuit supplies the refrigerating capacity necessary to cool the hydrogen. Hydrogen in the form of a pure gas at approx. 20 bar is fed into the vacuum-insulated cold box and, after a certain degree of supercooling at the end of the refrigeration process, it expands through a Joule-Thomson valve into the tank where liquefaction subsequently takes place. The helium refrigeration cycle and hydrogen liquefaction are therefore completely separate. The main components of the system are a helium compressor with oil purification, a cold box with heat exchangers and a helium gas-bearing expansion turbine, the liquid hydrogen and an attachment for filling transport containers.
In the over 1000 l/h range, the refrigeration capacity is attained through cooling and ortho-para conversion of hydrogen by means of a hydrogen Claude process, i.e. at the cold end of the process the H2 feed gas can be combined with the H2 of the refrigeration process.

For larger-scale systems, it is an advantage to plan separate cold boxes for cooling the ambient temperature first to 80 K and then from 80 down to 20 K.
